Who We Are

About Us

Preserving the Arakan (Arakanese) language — one word, one voice, one generation at a time.

Arakan Language is an open, community-driven dictionary project dedicated to documenting, preserving, and sharing the Arakan (Arakanese) language — connecting speakers, learners, and researchers across the world.

Our Mission

The Arakan language carries centuries of culture, literature, and identity. Yet, like many regional languages, it faces the risk of being lost as younger generations move toward dominant languages. Our mission is to build a reliable, accessible, and free digital resource that keeps Arakan alive — for native speakers, diaspora communities, students, and linguists alike.

We believe language is more than words. It is memory, history, and belonging. Every entry we document is a small act of preservation.

Why It Matters

Language loss is rarely sudden — it happens quietly, across a generation, when children stop hearing their mother tongue at home. Digital tools help reverse this trend by making the language visible, searchable, and shareable.

  • For native speakers — a way to record and revisit the words of their community.
  • For learners — a clear path to build vocabulary with pronunciation guidance.
  • For researchers — structured, open data for linguistic and cultural studies.
  • For the diaspora — a bridge back to the language of their roots.

Our Values

  • Accuracy — every entry is reviewed before publishing.
  • Openness — free to use, free to browse, no paywalls.
  • Respect — for the language, its speakers, and their heritage.
  • Community — contributions from speakers and researchers are always welcome.
